The steps, in writing.
Give one parent a login on the spot with Enable Portal, then create logins for everyone at once: parents with an email get a link to choose a password (it works once, within seven days), and phone-only parents get printed sign-in slips, shown only once. See a parent sign in from the email, reset a lost slip's password on the parent's page, and the phone-only parent sign in and choose his own password.
Enable one parent
Open the parent without a login and select Enable Portal.
Create the remaining logins
Use Create parent logins for the remaining parents. Parents with email receive a one-use setup link valid for seven days; phone-only parents need the printed sign-in slip shown at creation.
Complete the first sign-in
Email recipients choose their password through the link. Phone-only parents sign in with their phone number and temporary password, then choose a new password.
Replace a lost slip
Open the existing parent and reset the password. Give the newly displayed temporary password to the parent; it replaces the old one.
